Limb Pain, Having Temperature. MRI Scan Shows Disk Deterioration, Taking Amytryptaline, Condition Getting Worse. Reason?

Hi, My wife has chronic pain in all of her limbs. She also has a temperature this evening. She is in so much pain when she moves. A recent MRI scan showed that three of the disks in her neck have deteriorated and has been replaced with bone material. My doctor gave her amytryptaline for the pain. It seems to be getting worse, and I am very worried.

Hi
Thank you for your question to HCM.

If the disc deterioration you have described means disc degeneration and replacement by bone it is unlikely to be a cause of pain in all limbs. Mobile disc is the one that can cause problems by herniating or causing stenosis (narrowing) of the spinal canal. A disc that is replaced by bone makes the joints immobile and painless. In fact bony fusion across the disc space is the aim of spinal fusion surgery to prevent further stenosis from happening. Disc degeneration in neck can cause neck pain but all limb pain is unlikely to be coming from those.

In the light of wide spread pain and temperature infection is suspected and detailed examination along with blood tests and appropriate imaging is needed by a physician.

Hope this is helpful. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have.
