Lost Weight, Tiredness, Nauseated. On Levothyroxine. What Should The Dosage Be?

Over Xmas I was very nauseas and tired . I lost over a stone and a half End of jan I was prescribed 20mg in the morning and night and 50mg of levothyroxine which has now been increased to a 100 as was feeling a little more tired than usual
.i am putting on weight probably around 11 lbs so far and the last few days my stomach looks hugely bloated but I don't feel bloated . Devastated I'm putting on weight . Do you think my dosage is too high and how can I loose the weight ?

Levothyroxine is a substitute for normal physiological thyroxine in the body.It is a harmone in the body which plays a vital role in many of our normal functions.As the harmone in involved in multiple functions ,its imbalances cause non specific symptoms like nausea,lassitude,malaise etc.This was exactly your experience over x mas, as I can gather.The dose of Levothyroxine is adjusted according to clinical condition and serum levels.Hopefully your thyroxine dose would have been increased, depending on the above parameters.And regarding your last query,gain in weight is a symptom of hypothyroidism and not hyperthyroidism.Hyperthyroidism results in increase metabolic rates and loss in weight.So,your putting on of weight, in any way would be related to inadequacy of thyroxine levels and not due to overdose.Instead of speculating so much,it may be advisable for you to get the serum thyroid profile to decide on further course of action.Hope it helps clearing your query.

Hello dear,

First of all, the dose of levothyroxine should be adjusted after consultation with the treating Physician after fresh estimation of the Thyroid profile.

To tackle the problem of overweight, a low calorie low fat diet and regular exercise should be followed such as:

1. Avoid eating white breads, rice and pasta. They have high calories and increases the blood sugar level.
2. It is better to have complex carbohydrates such as whole wheat bread, oatmeal and brown rice.
3. Consume low fat versions of milk and cheese and avoid oily foods.
4. Have a diet rich in low calorie protein foods such as egg whites, skinless chicken, fish, etc.
5. It is better to avoid soft drinks and fruit juices which are rich in calories.
Instead, drink large amount of water (about 6 to 8 glasses) throughout the day.
6. Dietary fiber such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and nuts can also be included in the diet.
