My Father Is 78yrs Old And He Had His First Epilepsy
My father is 78yrs old and he had his first epilepsy(fits) in Feb. this year.Then the doctors prescribed him to use Eptoin 100mg twice daily for 3 months and 1 tablet for longtime.I want to know will the epilepsy repeat again and will there be any side effects for prolonged use of these tablets

Hi Was there any H/O fall or anything else? Is there any other observation of unusual behaviour? If does get another episode see a neurophysician and if necessary an EEG done. An episode of epilepsy ata later age may neede to be investgated

Though cause of epilepsy at this age must be investigated, it is almost impossible to reply to your questions. Still I try:
1) Recurrence-- may NOT occur; if occurs, may require increase in doses of anticonvulsants or even addition/replacements of another anticonvulsant medication. Dont worry-- now a number of safe & effective drugs are available for proper control.
2) Control-- See (1). Eptoin is a good drug; oldest & still very effective. Drugs usually given for 3 years after last attack of epilepsy.
I hope it explains some doubts.

Ayurveda has described treatment of epilepsy so Rest, normalized diet and specific time to take food can help such persons control epilepsy. Abhayanga or Ayurvedic oil massage, shirodhara (pouring of medicated oil over head), thalam (retaining medicated oil on head) helps in pacifying mind.and Nerve tonic herbs like Aswagandha (Withania somnifera), Brahmi (Bacopa monniera), Jatamamsi (Nardastachys jatamansi), Shanka pushpi (Evolvulus alsinoides) etc are used to pacify nervous system and to reduce instances of abnormal brain functioning.
