Obstruction In The Small Bowel. Cleared Via Nasogastric Tube. Had Colonoscopy. Precautions?
I recently had an obstruction in the small bowell. It was cleared via nasogastric tube The doctors think it was an adhesion that caused it I am having a colonoscopy this week to reveal more information. As the pain was so excrutiating, and am fearful of it reoccurring, are their any preventative methods in order for this to not occur?
Hi and thanks for the query, It is interesting that the obstruction was an upper gastrointestinal tract or small bowel obstruction. there should not really be any reason for fear for reoccurrence or that it might have a serious impact on the procedure you should be going through in the days ahead. I do suggest you just be cautious and ensure the normal precautions taken when doing usual colonoscopy be taken. No worries for now. Kind regards
Hello and welcome to HCM, You have mentioned in your history that you suffered from an obstruction in the small bowel which cleared after inserting a naso-gastric tube. Your history suggests that a small surgical procedure was performed during the insertion of the tube. I assume that the obstruction got relieved after the procedure. The procedure has probably cleared way the obstruction. The colonoscopy is probably being performed to look for any lesion, change in mucosa or abnormality in the colonic mucosa. Colonoscopy will not cause similar episode. You can relax and get the procedure done.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja P Wahal
