Pain In Collar, Shoulder After Lifting Weight. Solution?
Hello Doctor, I have some problem in my collar muscles and my shoulder muscles because when i lift some weight the maximum part of weight is taken by collar muscles which then pains a lot. Few years back, before starting this problem, I used to work out very hard for collar and shoulder muscles. Now after so many years I have joined gym again, the shoulder exercises puts lot of stress on collar part also and it pains unbearably. I am afraid that by exercising hard in the previous years, I have damaged my collar and shoulder muscles. please tell me what this problem could be? and what should I do to make my muscle s weight carrying capacity as it used to be before first exercising??
Hello, Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum. Since, you mentioned that few years back your muscles were very strong for weight lifting.
Please note down FEW YEARS back , now you are older than few years back and this is the answer your query. Any how gradually you will be able to lift same weight ( as previous one ) ,but not regularly as muscles will cramp ( due to prolong use). Protein is the best solution of your problem as it will build your muscle ( mass) as well increase stamina. So use high protein diet. Keep an eye over kidney function test during this period. Good luck. Dr. HET
From the given description, I feel that the cause of your pain in shoulder and collar area is due to sudden, unaccustomed strain of the involved muscles.
I suggest you to increase the frequency of gym exercises in a GRADUAL MANNER so that your muscles get acclimatized. I am sure that you will regain your normal strength as before over a period of time.
The temporary management of your muscular pains is as follows -
* Rest to the affected part and don't involve in activities which puts additional burden on the strained muscles. * Ice packing to alleviate acute pain. * Once the acute pain subsides, moist heat fomentation to relax the muscles * Analgesic & muscle relaxant medications as needed
Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello,
Thanks for writing to us.
The symptoms you have described are more likely to be symptoms of muscles strain.
To get relief from the pain and for quick healing:
1. Do hot fomatation at the site.
2. Apply local anti-inflammatory gel 2-3 times a day.
3. Take anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen to reduce pain and local swelling or inflammation.
4. Do not lift weight or try to do exercise that involve painful muscles. Give proper time for the injury to heal.
Hope this helps you.
Wishing you good health...
Regards.
