Pain, Suffering From Herniated Disk With Small Annual Tear. Recovery Period After Having Herniated Disc?
My son has a herniated disk with a small annular tear. He is 19 and injured it a year and a half ago. He still has pain when he tries to be at all active, even though he has done a lot of physio. Is this pain possibly because of the annular tear, as it appears from the MRI that he doesn't have much nerve impingement. And what would be a normal recovery period after a herniated disk at L5S1? Thanks Sandra
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM. This is just to let you know that the intervertebral disc is a "avascular" structure (without blood supply) so the chance of healing is very remote. So i suggest your son not to involve in impact sports like jumping or soccer which will cause further worsening of the annular tear leading to disc prolapse. If given adequate rest and as your son is very young (the disc will be highly elastic), the chances of disc regression is definetely very high. Hope this helps
