Painful, Tight Feeling In Throat. Comes Back When Laid Down. Suggest
I've been waking up several times a night with a painful, tight feeling in my throat which makes me cough and gag. Sitting up and drinking water helps, but I normally have to stay sat up and sipping water for 10-20 minutes before it goes away, and it often comes back as soon as I lie down. It's making me so tired because I am always up half the night. I don't have a cough at all during the day

General & Family Physician, Dr. Anuj Dan's Response
After reading your complaints the main two things that pop to my head are that you either suffer from nasal congestion or strep throat.
Both conditions are treatable, congestion by :
- Sleep on 2 pillows or elevate the head of the bed.
- Use long-lasting nasal decongestant nasal spray just before retiring X up to 5 days.
- Reduce the heat or get a humidifier or both
and strep throat by antibiotics.
Still I would recommend that you see either a doctor or an ENT specialist, who can concretely prove the diagnosis.
Hope this helped
