Pregnant. Done Vaginal Exams And Ultrasound. Large Head Size. C-section Required?
i am wondering do i really need a c-section or should i just induce or wait till the baby is ready. i am 34 i have had 3 children. 97(7lbs 12oz) 99(6lbs 15oz) 01(5lbs 9.2oz) all vaginal/natural with no pain meds. i had no prenatal care for any of these except 1st ultasounds so im new to the whole doctor & tests. i am currently 38wks & 5days. i did not know i was pregnant until 4/2/13 i was 26wks & 6days(well i suspected but thats when it was confirmed). i had an ultrasound on 4/2/13 which confirmed & put my due date at 7/3/13. everything was fine at this point. i then found a doctor because it has been 12yrs since i have had a baby & because of my age. i had my 2nd ultasound on 5/23/13 & was told my son was head down & mesuring a week ahead & weighed 6lbs & some(i dont remember) i have done the first glucose test but failed at every attempt to do the 2nd(1st due to my son getting in trouble at school, 2nd due to a mix up with the ob office & lab work order & 3rd no transportation). i have had 4 vaginal exams: 1. pap smear( it took 2sec. ob jus did a swob) 2. some kind of swab test( 2 swobs) again took 2-3secs done by midwife. 3. at 37wks the doctor examed to see if i was dialating(gloved hand, insertation of finger with sum kind of gel)...the baby had not moved further down & i was not dialated. 4. at 38wks same exam i had at 37wks. i was told i was 1/2cm no other info given. the doctor had me do another ultrasound to see how big the baby was(i also think because i couldnt get the 2nd glucose test done). on 6/20/13 i had the ultrasound at 38wks 1day the tech said the baby was mesuring 3weeks ahead..the head was 41wks, the stomach 40/41wks & the leg bone on target. she said the baby weighed 9lbs 3oz with a half pound error rate putting the baby at a min 8lbs 5oz. on 6/21/13 my ob had me come in he said i needed to have a c-section because the baby is too big. my only question was is it absolutly necessary to have a c-section. his response was i dont think the baby will fit because 1. he has done my pelvis exam(i cant see how he determined this based on the 4 exams i have had) and 2. all my other children where smaller. no other reasons were given. no medical dignosis given. he then asked if i wanted to have my tubes tied durning the c-section. i said no & he then scheduled me to have a c-section on 6/26/13 when i turn 39wks. nothing has been said about shoulder width or any concerns about the head size. jus that the baby is big. i asked about being induced & trying to birth but i havent heard anything. i did try to cancel the c-section & they refussed.
Hello With the digital exam that the doctor performed at 37 or 38 weeks, a clinical idea of the pelvic capacity can be measured. This is what was probably done. Also, you should go for the glucose test, as you might be diabetic, with a large baby expected.one option is to wait until term ( 40 weeks ) and try for induction of labour, however, with a big baby, there might be complications like arrested labour, injury to the baby or yourself etc. Please take a second opinon since online it is difficult to say if the diagnosis of cephalo pelvic disproportion was correct. Take care.
