HI, thanks for using healthcare magic
The most common types of
headaches are migraines, tension headaches, cluster headaches, headaches related to congested sinuses.
From the history you have given of a
severe headache, throbbing, associated with vomiting and a family history of headaches, it is likely that you are experiencing migraines.
There are certain criteria for the diagnosis of migraines: there must be a history of at least 5 episodes of headaches
(2) the headaches last from 4 to 72 hours
(3) at least 2 of the following is present: headache is on one side of the head, it is throbbing, moderate to severe in intensity and worse with activity
(4) at least one of the following: (a) nausea and vomiting (b) worse with noise and light
Treatment for migraines is divided into two types: preventing the headaches from occuring and treating the present headaches
IF you experience the headaches frequently , the pain medication does not help or you have to use it very often, then your doctor may suggest medication to stop the headaches from occuring.
In terms of treatment to stop the headache you need to: (1) reduce any triggers to the headaches such as lack of sleep, foods that may be causing the headaches, stress
(2) you can try relaxation techniques
(3) there are different types of pain medication that can be used such as
ibuprofen, aspirin. In addition there are pain medication that is specific for migraines such as
sumatriptan,
eletriptan,
rizatriptan,
zolmitriptan. These may require a prescription from your doctor. The pain medication works best it you take it within 15 minutes of the headache starting.
Hope this helps
