Sharp Pain Through The Leg With Bruised Ankle After An Injury. No Swelling. Concerned
I sprained my right ankle about 5 weeks ago and it was pretty bad but that healed up really well about two weeks ago. I was playing some flag football on saturday (4 days ago) I dont remember twisting it or tweaking it or anything like that. Well over the past 3 days my foot has gotten really bad. I can hardly put any weight on my heel without a sharp pain shooting through my lower leg and the inside of my ankle/foot area is all purple and red. The weird thing and the thing that worries me is that there is no swelling .
From your description it sounds to me that you have reinjured an old injury without necessarily twisting or traumatizing it, but the fact that you played football must have strained the old injury, hence you developed the new symptoms. Sprain injury could heal pretty rapidly with disappearance of pain and swelling, but it does not mean that the affected muscle tissues are completely healed. Purplish red ankle may signify petechia which is as a result of poor blood supply to the blood capillaries underlying the skin (this could still be as a result of the injury).
You will require some ice packs and some analgesia or NSAID (such as ibuprofen or aspirin) to treat the pain and may also require to wear braces and have some bed rest to allow good healing process to take place. Massage with topical antiinflammatory might be of great use.
Consult with an orthopedic surgeon if possible.
Hope this helps
