Should I Be Worried About Heavy Bleeding After Weaning Child?
Hi, I am a 30 year old female with 4 children and received the mirena iud on my six week check up after having my fourth child in Jan. of 2011. I just recently weened my son and 1 week later started to bleed very heavy. I thought at first that it was just a heavy menstrual period. But now 2 weeks later has yet to let up. i have been trying to contact a nurse or someone to talk to but have had no help. I am just wondering if this is something that happens after weening and the 2 year mark or should I be worried? Thank you
Hi, Thanks for the query. After stopping the breast feeding the hormonal levels may fluctuate. This can lead to menstrual irregularity to some extent. But having continuous bleeding for three weeks is some what abnormal. Intrauterine contraceptive devices can present with menstrual irregularities. Menorrhagia is one of them. So, once consult gynecologist and get examined to find out the possible cause for your problem. Then with her advice you can go for antifibrinolytic drugs to control the bleeding. If bleeding subsides and cycles regularize with that, no need to worry. If menorrhagia repeats in next cycles you may need additional dose of hormones for some time. Take care.
