Sore Throat. Rapid Strep Test Negative, Throat Culture Shows Enterobacter Species Moderate Growth. Normal Flora Of Throat Or Strep Bacteria?
I am a nurse practitioner at an urgent care . I patient was seen here a few days ago with sore throat. Rapid strep test was neg. Throat culture was collected to confirm no strep bacteria. Culture came back today saying enterobacter species moderate growth. I have never seen this. Do I treat or is it part of the normal flora of the throat?
We don't treat. Its a contaminant. Happens frequently as either a problem with technique, or the transport, or the lab. In any case we only treat Group A beta hemolytic strep.
