sir ,my father s ct scan report is as follows 1. mild ventriculomegaly 2.extensive bilateral periventricular deep white matter hypodensities atropic in nature. 3.area of gliosis in right occipital region. my fathers age is85yrs please advise medicines for him
Ventriculomegaly with periventricular atrophic changes could be due to a normal aging process (leading to cognitive impairment) or can be normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). In NPH, patient will have symptoms of urinary incontinence, imbalance in walking and dementia. The gliosis can result from a past ischemia/trauma. The CT scan can differentiate an aging process from NPH to an extend.
In case of normal aging, he can be supplemented with neuroprotective drugs which can be prescribed by a neurologist. In case of NPH, a neurosurgeon has to be consulted to decide on further medical treatment (actazolamide) or surgical treatment (shunting).
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
