Suggest Remedy For Hearing Loss

My 9yr son was complaining about wax and some irritation in ear during March 10. Then he gave his exam and got good result. His friends realised that he is having some hearing loss. we did not took problem so seriously after some days when we found that he is quiet ignorant we consulted ENT dr who said there is conductive loss and lack of concentration and he suggested antibiotics for 10 days and after 10 days he wrote antibiotics for next 10days. Boy activities were as usual only one day he had little fever and cold so I consulted child specialist who again continued antibiotics. After completing the course we again consulted him he said everything is fine. But on 21 April we took him to anther ENT specialist as that day he completely said that he cant hear at all. Dr diagnosed SNHL in both ears he recommended hearing aid he said there is no other treatment. Boy now started becoming irritating and he complain of sounds in his ears then we took him to Ahmedhabad where he was given antiviral etc and HBOT therapy. After theraph his sounds were normal. Now the HBOT drs told to repeat audigram after 15 days . He has got 10to 12 dB positive response and clinically also he is able to hear clapping, metallic and loud sounds. But ENT drs advise to go for cochlear and HBOT says we must repeat the therapy. We are confused . Boy has history of tonsilitis , scarlet fever, mumps and unilateral testies operation before. He has bony growths also. Is hearing loss any relation with this? Boy was very actve, smart , intelligent and music loving, use to play casio, guitar etc and very talkative . It is trauma in his and our life. If you can give some guidance we will be thankful to you. I doubt about audigrams one report says 89dB and other say 68dB etc . Pl help us in this matter thanks

Hello,

Is hearing loss only in one ear or in both?
If it is only in one ear, you may avoid implant or surgeries if you don't want because implant will give you a machine to be worn all your lifetime. You may have gone through but still to remind is cochlear implant is nothing but implantable hearing aid with an internal component implanted in ears with surgery and an external part which is to be kept outside. It is at present Gold Standard treatment for some candidates with SNHL.

My personal advice if it is only for a single ear. You can avoid or postpone surgery. Take good care and hearing hygiene for rest of life. He may feel directional problem for some time but he may get habituated and probably go unnoticed as he is a young child and may not notice this phenomenon and grow well as a normal adult. It is like a vision with one eye only. You may take a chance with HBOT and some other medicines.

If it is for both the ear, then definitely Cochlear Implant is the answer. But there are options of BAHA if he is a candidate for the same. And if not at all you are willing for surgery the boy can be given Hearing aids of strong class from a good manufacturer if he is comfortable with the aids.

Please take note that any surgery involves tremendous amount of money and dependency for lifetime and maintenance. This is not to scare you but just to inform you. Be informed and take an informed decision.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
