Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat And Respiratory Tract Infection

I have had a cold for three weeks. My symptoms got better earlier this week but returned as bad as ever a few days ago. I have had fevers throughout the cold as well as a cough and runny nose (and now a sore throat again, which I had at the very beginning of the cold). I was worried about a possible bacterial infection, but I am exhibiting all symptoms still (runny nose and cough with yellow phlegm, low grade fevers). I thought that a bacterial infection would only be affecting one part of the body. Is there a chance I have a bacterial infection or could this cold be taking longer than three weeks to heal? I know for sure I will not be feeling better within a few days since I am feeling as bad as I did at the worst of the cold.

Hi,thank you for posting your query on health care magic.

Looking at your symptoms like cold not getting relieved in 2 weeks, yellow sputum, fever, etc, there is a possibility of bacterial infection causing inflammation of the nose ,throat and respiratory tract.

You may find relief by taking the following medications:
Oral Antibiotic like Amoxycillin with Clavulanic acid combination,
Oral decongestant like Phenylephrine and Nasal decongestant drops like Xylometazoline(take decongestant only if you are not suffering from hypertension),
Antihistaminic like Cetrizine,
Mucolytic like Ambroxol
Antipyretic like Paracetamol,
Analgesic with Antiinflammatory like Ibuprofen with Antacid like Rantac.

Also do steam inhalation.Do warm saline gargles.Drink lots of warm fluids.Avoid cold food and dust.

After following the above measures,if your symptoms are not improving in 2-3days,then it would be advisable to consult an Otolaryngologist doctor.

Hope this answers your question.Take care.
