Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Respiratory Viral Infection Reduce Fluid Intake And Urination In Children?
my 22 month old daughter has had only one wet diaper in the last 12 hours and she has eaten very little today and is not really drinking a lot of liquids. We went to the hospital last week and were told that she has a respiratory viral infection. Is there something else wrong? She has also had a hacking cough and a runny nose for a week.
Children who have a respiratory viral infection often feel less thirst and hunger. This leads to less urination. It is important to encourage your child throughout the day to keep drinking fluids (water, sweat tea, cacao), so that he/she produces 3 wet diapers per 24 hours. If not, the child can become dehydrated and thus lengthening it's recovery period.
It is common for a respiratory viral infection to last for up to 2 weeks - but it often may be shorter than that. It sounds to me, that your child indeed has a respiratory viral infection. If you think, his/her overall condition worsens, it is important, that you bring her to your physician.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
