Suggest Ways To Use Mirena IUD

Hello, I have been on the Mirena IUD for 8 days now and was wondering how I could feel for the strings. I have tried and cannot seem to feel them. I am 5'7 and weigh about 130 lbs. I just got married in March and don't want a child until 3 more years from now. I have never had a child and knowing that the IUD might fall out is in the back of my mind and I don't want that to affect my intercourse with my husband. Any tips would be great on checking for strings or IUD.

Hello,

You should check for Mirena strings from time to time to make sure that they are in the correct position, you can feel them through your vagina near the cervix.

They will feel like the firm, rubbery strings. In case you cannot feel them you should report to your OBGYN urgently. It's rare for an IUD to slip out, so no worries. IUD's do not protect against STD.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
