Suspects Of Mono, Elevated White Blood Cell Count According To Doctor. Safe To Give Amoxicillin?
i took my 15 year old otherwise healthy daughter to the doctor today they think she may have mono It didn't show up in the cbc panel but they want her to come back in 3 days if not better. (It might not have shown up yet because of to early in timing) She hasn't had any antibiotics in well over a year and they did say that her white blood cell count was elevated. Would it hurt to give her amoxicillin 500 mg 2x a day for 7 days?
Infectious mononucleosis (mono) is caused by a virus ( EBV - epstein barr virus). Antibiotics are only useful for bacterial infections and would not help with a viral infection. It would be best not to give her any anti biotics unless a secondary bacterial infection should develop.
The treatment of mono is mainly supportive and involves pain killers, rest and anti pyretic medication for any fever.
I hope this helps
