Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Taken MRI. Given Valium Injection, Feeling Very Sleepy, Unable To Stay Awake. Is This The Cause For Concern?
today my wife had an mri in the shoulder. she was given 2 injections of valium to quiet/relax her. Tonight (about 5 hours after treatment she is so sleepy she cannot hardly leep her eyes open or stay awake. She just sleeps. IS there any danger here?? I can't hardly waker her up. Help please.
Thank you for your query. Valium contains Diazepam, a long acting benzodiazepine given for sedation. Its half life is around 36 hours, which means, it takes around 2-3 days to clear out of the system of the subject.
Please dont worry and I would like to reassure you that there is absolutely no need for any concern at this moment. This is an expected reaction, and the sedation will fade away on its own within around next 8- 10 hours. Please note that clearance time also depends on age, body weight, fat percentage of body, liver function, renal function, other medications taken etc and above all there is individual variation. If there is no hepatic (liver) impairment of your wife, please don't worry. Let her take some rest, she will be fine.
Hope I've been able to satisfy your query. Please feel free to ask for any further clarifications. Best of luck.
Dr. Sourav.
