Taking Montair For Chronic Cough. Symptoms Vanished But Reappeared Even After Taking Ascoril. Reason?
My son( 5 yrs old) was prescribed to take one montair-4 daily. His IgE is 367 and Himoglobin is 10.3. Since he is taking this from october-12 the symptoms of chronic coughing vanished, but since 15 days he is sniveling (no sneezing ) and for the last 4 days he showed the previous symptom of coughing. As per doctors prescription we are giving(alongwiththe montair tab) him 5 ml Ascoril expectorant 3 times daily but seems it is not sufficient for him. Please suggest what wrong is with him. Note: All other activities done by him are normal( Eating, drinking, urine , stool etc) and no side effects was found since he is consuming the montair-4 tab.
Hi
Thanks for your query
Welcome to HCM
As per discussion you child have had allergic rhinitis Allergic rhinitis is a group of symptoms affecting the nose. These symptoms occur when you breath-in something you are allergic to, such as dust, insect venom, or pollen etc
Montair is a montilucast which is indicated for the relief of symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis in patients 2 years of age and older.
As your child first relieved by montelucast but again had cough,it may be possible that there are mucous plugging/nasal blockage whish cause problem and not responding to cough expectorant
May be he caught some respiratory infection causing bronchitis.
Other possibilities are he has bronchospasm .(asthmatic bronchitis)
So you should consult to your doctor he would choose proper antibiotics and other medications for him as per physical examination.
Take care
Hello dear...
The symptoms as mentioned suggest that the cough might be allergic in nature.
Ascoril expectorant contains Salbutamol which is a bronchodilator; Guaiphenesin which is an expectorant & Bromhexine which is a Mucolytic.
These act as a measure for providing relief during acute attacks.
Whereas Montair is Montelukast, which is used as a maintenance therapy to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergies...it acts more as a preventive measure.
So...the medications given by the Pediatrician are correct...please continue them as advised.
Antihistaminic preparations may also be used to provide symptomatic relief.
Also maintain adequate hydration & give soft foods to maintain proper nutrition.
The best thing would be to make sure that your child is well protected from cold, dust & other allergens.
Wishing him a good health.
Thanks & take care.
