What Causes A Shooting Pain In The Wrist?

You know how everyone cracks their knuckles or wrist occasionally. Well a few days ago, I cracked by knuckles and my wrist along with it. It didn't bother me because mostly I do it all the time, but yesterday when I went to open then car door, a shooting pain went through my wrist along the outside. It didn't cause any swelling as far as I can tell and the pain went away after about an half an hour, but it came back again as I was shaking hands and this time more intense. I haven't done anything today to agitate it but every once in a while I can feel a little twinge of pain. I think I might just be a sprained muscle or over exerted muscle, but I wanted to check either way.
