What Causes Black Colored Lips At Birth?

Hi, Dr. We have a preterm newborn more than 3 wks old in NICU with black colored lips since birth. The parents are more concerned about this, and none of them have such a color.I want to know why it happens? Is it related to any diseases because the baby is having generalised dependent edema with hypoalbuminemia & increased cholestrole levels.

Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
Blackish discolouration could be indicator for congenital heart disease or blood disorders like hemoglobin disorders.
It is better to get him fully evaluated.
Discuss in detail about these with the treating doctor.
Regards
Dr Arun
