What Causes Bumps On The Back Of The Tongue?

Hi, I became sick yesterday and today am worse, with headache, aches all over, runny nose, yellow mucus from the nose, and now just noticed some lentil sized bumps on the back of my tongue, is this normal? I do not have a sore throat, mabye a little scratchy, but just haven't seen these bumps before and it's affecting my swallowing. I don't think it's from an allergic reaction to food either. Thanks.

Hello,

It seems that you are suffering from upper respiratory tract infection commonly known as the common cold and it is a common viral infection, and the symptoms that you are experiencing are all due to it. The bumps over the back of the tongue seem to be inflamed circumvallate papillae, and it also occurs secondary to infection and due to this, there is inflammation and pain.

You should take a course of antibiotics like Azithromycin for preventing secondary bacterial infection, take an anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen or Naproxen if there is a fever Tylenol can be taken. Take decongestants like Pseudoephedrine Oral as well as nasal drops. Do warm saline gargles, suck on throat lozenges, do steam inhalation, sip on plenty of warm water, avoid spicy and chilled foods. For painful Papillae gargle with a numbing mouthwash containing Lignocaine and gargle with 1:1 solution of milk of magnesia and Benadryl.
