What Causes Decrease In Tinnitus While Having A Menstrual Period?
I ve had tinnitus for 18 years but over the last 4 weeks it has worsened considerably. i am 53 years old and am particulary bothered by a loud hum in my left ear. I am well physically and have taken HRT for 9 years. I noticed though that when I was menstruating the noise in my left ear lessened. Is there a connection and would it be worth having a CT scan?
Tinnitus has many causes such as changes in internal structure of cochlea so that there is continuous movement of some hair cells for hearing giving you tinnitus. Hypertension. Vascular loop around vestibulocochlear nerve. Problems related to the nerve. All these can be diagnosed ion some cases well, correlated by clinical evaluation to the investigations.
I would advise you to consult an ENT surgeon. Do an audiometry, CT combined with MRI of Mastoids and brain. This is called combo-study. One a proper cause is found then the treatment can be specific. HRT is hormone replacement therapy. Menstruation reduces the water lodging in body thus causing less tinnitus.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
