What Causes Pregnancy Like Symptoms While On Mirena?
I am 25 and on the Mirena. I have had it for roughly 8 months now. Just within the past few weeks I have been experiencing the typical pregnancy symptoms. I understand that they be a common side affect from the Mirena but then I started feeling the all to familiar fluttering in my lower abdomen. I have been passing it off as gas but am truly worried. I had two negative test results.
Hi there, I have read your question and can understand your worries, so let me just try to put them at rest: 1) The typical symptoms of pregnancy are due to high levels of progesterone hormone. 2) Mirena also contains progesterone which it releases at frequent intervals. 3) Also, progesterone hormone reduces intestinal motility and causes gas and indigestion. 4) If you were pregnant, at least one pregnancy test would have been positive. 5) I suggest you do not worry about being pregnant. If you really want to be sure, you can get a blood test called serum beta HCG which gives accurate diagnosis of pregnancy.
Hope this helps. Thanks, Dr. Shikha Shah
