What Does Full Thickness Chondromalacia Patella & Normal Menisci, Ligaments And Tendons Indicate?

I have chronic knee pain. Recently, I had an MRI. Findings read: Full thickness osteochondral defect is seen int he lateral aspect of the patella. Articulating cartilages in the femorotibial compartment are normal. Cruciate ligaments, medial & lateral supporting structures of the extensor mechanism are normal. Menisci are normal in size, shape & contour. No evidence of tear. No evidence of joint effusion. Negative for Baker's cyst. No abnormal signal seen in the surrounding muscles. Impression: Full thickness chondromalacia patella & normal menisci, ligaments and tendons. What does this all mean in words I'll understand? Is this treatable? What is the treatment?

Hello and welcome to HCM,
Patella is a small bone present in front of the knee joint.
Patella acts as a knee cap and protects the knee joint from injury and other insults.
Chondromalacia of patella refers to degeneration of the patella bone and degeneration of the cartilages which attach patella to the knee joint.
The causes of chondromalacia of patella include trauma, injury, age related degeneration and unknown causes etc.
All the other cartilages of the knee joint - menisci, ligaments and tendons are within normal limits.
The management of chondromalacia largely depends on its cause.
Anti-inflammatory drugs, rest, compression, elevation and physiotherapy are various modalities of treatment.
However, which modality is suitable for you will be decided by your treating doctor.

Thanks and take care
