Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughters baby was born with something on his chest and when a MRI was done they could see that it went to his strunum and believed to have veins...they received a call from the Dr and said they have to see a pediatric surgeon because they said it was a sinus tract...doesn t make sense to me...
This is a common condition that is easy to treat. It is called a presternal sinus and is usually due to a small tract that runs from the skin downwards.
It will secrete mucus and clear liquid. It needs to be removed as it can get infected sometimes. Removing it is a standard procedure, child does not even need to be admitted in hospital. 99% of the time, it does not recur and it has no long term effects. What is important is that you see a pediatric surgeon to get it taken out as they need an understanding of teh embryology and knowledge of the tract. A general surgeon may not understand that with due respect. Whichever city are you in, please find a senior pediatric surgeon for the same.
