What Treatment Is Required After Analyzing MRI Report?

Hi, my son is 12 years old and has been complaining of neck pain for 2 years. He had an MRI done about a year ago and it reads. C3-4 - C6-7: mild disc desiccation. Minimal broad-based posterior disc bulge. What kind of doctor does he needs to see to correct this? He is always in pain, but sometimes a lot more.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

There is disc degeneration of cervical spine between vertebrae C 3 - C 4 and C 6 - C 7. This is resulting in the disc bulging between the bones. The nerve roots pass through these neural foramina and he might have severe nerve root compression at that level which is giving him pain. This is known as neural foraminal encroachment. It is unusual to have this condition at 12 years of age and he may need to consult a neurosurgeon and take pain relief medications and avoid sudden neck movements. If the pain is unbearable and the condition is progressing then surgical treatment might be necessary as per your doctors clinical evaluation.
