Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Why Is Megace Prescribed After Removal Of Endometrial Polyp?
I was diagnosed with simple cystic glandular hyperplasia. A large endometrial polyp was removed. The pathology report stated there is no evidence of atypia or malignancy within the tissue available for microscopic evaluation. I am also on blood thinner because of DVT. After this medicine gets stable, my GYN plans to put me on a medicine by the name of MEGACE. I would like to know the name of this medicine and what is intended to do?
I have read your query and understood your concerns. Megace is a synthetic derivative of the natural hormone in the body called progesterone. It is commonly prescribed in various cachexic condition in individuals with increased weight loss due to several cancerous condition or STIs. Since the pathological report is not in favour of malignancy, it is better to follow healthy diet to improve your post operative status.
Megace is usually to stimulate appetite to increase food intake to improve weight and health. Common side effects are nausea, diarrhoea, weight gain, etc. Megace is not necessary on my opinion. Discuss with your doctor about the benefits outweighing the side effects.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pradeepraj, General & Family Physician
