Types of cardiomyopathy

Extrinsic cardiomyopathy: In this the cause for the cardiomyopathy is outside the heart like

• Congenital heart disease
• Nutritional diseases
• Ischemic cardiomyopathy
• Hypertensive cardiomyopathy
• Valvular cardiomyopathy
• Inflammatory cardiomyopathy
• Alcoholic car4diomyopathy
• Diabetic cardiomyopathy
• Restrictive cardiomyopathy
• Cardiomyopathy secondary to certain systemic disease like anemia, sleep apnea, hyperthyroidism, myocardial infarction.

Intrinsic cardiomyopathy: Intrinsic cardiomyopathy is due to weakness in the muscle of the heart. The causes of intrinsic cardiomyopathy are drug, alcohol, certain infections like Hepatitis C, genetic and idiopathic.

Types of intrinsic cardiomyopathy

• Dilated cardiomyopathy: It is the most common type. In this the heart is enlarged and the function is grossly reduced.
• Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: It is a genetic disorder.
• Restrictive cardiomyopathy
• Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy
• Noncompaction cardiomyopathy

Symptoms and signs

• High blood pressure
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Blurred vision
• Facial flushing
• Tinnitus 

Tests and diagnosis

• Blood tests like complete blood count, ESR, renal function tests, thyroid function tests, electrolytes, cardiac enzymes
• Chest x-ray
• Electrocardiogram
• Echocardiogram 

Treatment 

• Medications
• Implanted pacemakers
• Defibrillators
• Ventricular assist device or ablation
• Heart transplantation
