Home-Based Foods and Herbs for lactating Mothers

There are several ingredients that are easily available in our kitchen that help to improve breast milk production in breastfeeding mothers. These foods and herbs have been used for centuries in many cultures. Here are some most commonly available foods and herbs:

1. Fenugreek Seeds (Methi Dana)

  • Fenugreek is one of the most popular herb to increase milk quantity. It contains phytoestrogens, which can help stimulate milk production. It can be used in many ways, like as preparing ladoos, consuming it in powdered form, or soaking it overnight in water and consuming in morning.

2. Fennel Seeds (Saunf)

  • Fennel is often recommended to breastfeeding mothers for improving milk quantity. It is known to have estrogen-like properties, which may help increase milk quantity. It can be used in making tea, Ladoos and can also be chewed after every meal in small quantity,

3. Ginger (Saunth)

  • Ginger is believed to increase breast milk production by improving circulation and reducing stress, which can impact milk flow. It can be taken by mixing it with honey, lemon water and in ginger tea form as well.

6. Sesame Seeds (Til)

  • Sesame seeds are rich in calcium and are thought to be beneficial for lactating mothers. They are often used in traditional recipes to help increase milk production. We can make Til Ladoos, Til Powder, Til & Jaggery, Til Chutney & paste and add it to curries or soup.

Cumin Seeds (Jeera)

  • Cumin seeds are known to improve digestion and milk production. They can be used in cooking or taken as a warm drink.

 

Makhana (Lotus seed/Fox Seed)

·         Makhana is believed to help in increasing breast milk production. In traditional Indian practices, makhana is often included in the diets of breastfeeding mothers because it is considered a natural galactagogue, which is a substance that promotes lactation. It can be eaten roasted form, or by making ladoos, adding it to milk and Makhana Chivda.
