Vaginitis is the inflammation of vagina leading to itching, discharge and pain. It is mainly caused by the imbalance in the vaginal bacterial or due to infection of the vagina. It can also occur due to decreased estrogen levels especially in the menopause.
Types of Vaginitis
Bacterial vaginosis: It is mainly caused by overgrowth of normal vaginal bacteria which are found in the vagina.
Yeast infections: It is mainly caused by a fungus called Candida albicans. It is normally found in vagina.
Trichomoniasis: It is caused by a parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. It is commonly transmitted through the intercourse.
Atrophic Vaginitis: It occurs due to reduced estrogen levels after menopause. In the vaginal becomes thin and dry leading to symptom skin itching, burning and pain.
Non infectious Vaginitis: It is caused by vaginal sprays, perfumed soaps, scented detergents, spermicidal products, allergic to condoms.
Symptoms
Vaginal discharge: In bacterial vaginosis the discharge will be grayish white, foul smelling like fish. IN yeast infections there will be intense itching with thick white discharge resembling cottage cheese. In trichomoniasis it will be greenish yellow and frothy discharge.
