Posted on Mon, 30 Nov 2015
Question: What is the best pain relief for prominent disc protrusion in the midline which impinges the anterior the the cal space and caused distortion of the spinal cord in C4/5 and C5/6 . MRI taken April 2010. Managed with massages and exercises of neck and occasional anti inflammatory or Panadol. Recently it has been worse and Panadol or panadol oesteo only takes the edge off the pain. Would lyrica be suitable? I am 68 years old and want to continue to play golf

Brief Answer:
Lyrica contains pregabalin which is an effective neurogenic pain reliever

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.\

1. The medicine panadol contains paracetamol and is a low power pain relief medicine. It is probable that there have been recent changes in your cervical spine. Since the earlier MRI neck spine was done in 2010 therefore it is better to get another MRI scan cervical spine to know of any significant changes which is causing recent onset worsening of pain.

2. Lyrica is pregabalin and is an effective neurogenic pain relief medicine. It works in moderate pain and is prescribed to patients having disc problem. Some people might get sleepiness after having lyrica. This is given on prescription and starting at a recommended dose. Please discuss this with your doctor.

3. I understand your pain and discomfort since years and probably you are under right management including physiotherapy and mild pain relief when required. Disc problems are known to increase with time and as much possible the pain is controlled by medicines of different groups.

Hope your query is answered.
