Is Pregnancy Possible Despite Having Mirena Implant?

default
Posted on Mon, 5 Jan 2015
Question: Hi I had the mirena coil fitted a year and a half ago under GA, the last couple of days I have been feeling nauseous, tired, and suffering from headaches, this exactly how I felt when pregnant with my first two kids. Could I be pregnant? And if I was could I have a normal pregnancy? I had a smear a year ago and the doctor could see the strings. Thanks

Brief Answer:
PREGNANCY IS RARE, CAN BE NORMAL.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Well, the side effects mimic those that users of Mirena often experience, yes, sometimes after a year too.
However, please take a blood pregnancy test or get a pelvic ultrasound scan done to rule out a pregnancy.
If there is a pregnancy, yes, you could have a normal pregnancy.
However, there is always a risk of ectopic pregnancy with Mirena.
At times, an intrauterine pregnancy with the Mirena in situ can be complicated by infections, miscarriages, preterm labour etc.
There are reported normal pregnancies too.
You would have to weight the pros and cons, however, pregnancy with the Mirena inside is quite quite rare.
Please confirm pregnancy first before stressing out about it.
Mirena is actually one of the most effective methods of birth control, less than 8 in 1000 women become pregnant while using it .
So relax.
All the best
