40 Days Old, Throws Up Entire Feed, Twists His Body Showing Discomfort. Gave Colicaid, Domstal. Suggestions ?
Hi. My baby is 40days old. He is being bottle fed on nan with occasional feeds of expressed milk.Since past 2 weeks he is throwing his entire feed that is non curdled.at times I can see milk in his mouth even after several minutes of feeding. On laying him down he twists his body showing discomfort. We gave him colic aid , sos. When we contacted our paed, he said baby had GERD and vomit is a reflux .he prescribed him domstal drops , thrice a day for 7 to 10 days and said it does not have any side effects while colic aid is a medicine and should be used as the last resort. Could you please suggest what medicine is correct and and what can be done to ease the baby s trouble.
Hi
Thanks for your query.
Regurgitation of feeds in seen in 40% of infants.
I suggest you to continue with domstal drops as advised by your doctor.
Give feeds in small quantity more freguently.
Keep baby held against shoulder for 20 minutes after feeding.
Keep head end raised to 45 degree while lying down.
This will subside as age progresses.
If symptoms persist get him re evaluated by pediatrician.
Wishing your baby good health.
God bless.
Yes those symptoms are suggestive of GERD. Prokinetics and H2 blockers which reduce acid production will be useful in the dosage as prescribed by your doctor. Proper burping after every feed is important. Elevation of the head end of the bed will be useful.
Continue to ask further queries. Hope this helps. Take care. Dr Y V Siva Sankara Murty, M.D. (Pediatrics) Associate Professor of Pediatrics.
