Do Dayquil And Synthroid Interact When Taken Together?
Hi! I m on Synthroid for Hashimoto s Thyroiditis. i m also a Type 1 diabetic. I took a dayquil a couple of days ago. One, which is half dosage. Had insomnia and heart palpitations, as well as EXTREMELY low blood sugars for 24 hours. Dayquil doesn t list Synthroid as an interaction , but warns agains people with hypothyroidism using it. what s the deal??
Dayquil has different formulations eg dayquil cough , dayquil cold and flu , dayquil severe cold and flu.
The decongestant that is present in some of these can cause insomnia and palpitations. This is a possible side effect of oral decongestants eg phenylephrine or pseudoephedrine.
It is possible that there is concern with the interaction between the thyroid replacement and the decongestant though most persons do not have a negative reaction.
It would be best, in light of your insomnia and palpitations, to avoid oral decongestants in this and other cough meds.
I hope this helps
