Feeling Tightness And Pain In The Chest And Breathing Difficulty After Swallowing A Bone. X-ray Normal. What Could Be The Problem?
Hi doctor, sorry about my english, I m not a native speaker Three weeks ago I swallowed a chicken bone and since then I m having problems breathing and chest ache on the right side, I feel tightness in my chest and hurts when I swallow. I had the X-ray thing of my through done but nothing appears. What do you think the problem is?
Hi, The bone would usually show up on the x-ray so as your x-Ray is clear then the bone probably has gone. The symptoms you are experiencing are likely to be due to the trauma it caused when you swallowed it. There will have been some irritation and inflammation of the esophagus. This would account for pain in the first week or so but as your symptoms are still present after 3 weeks, I suggest you see a doctor as there is a possibility that the bone may have punctured the esophagus and infection may have set in. If this is the case, you would need antibiotics. I hope this is of help to you. Regards, Dr K A Pottinger, MBChB. FRCA
