Head Injury, Clear Fluid Leakage From Nose, Previous Chest Infection. Causes For Symptoms?

Hi I fell a month ago and hit my head, I went to a&e and they checked me out and said I was fine but today when I bent over clear fluid ran out my nose ... I have had a chest infection and been sick for a while so would this be because of that or the head injury? The head injury was a month ago so surely I would have had other complications by now if it was serious? Many thanks

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

You could be suffering from CSF rhinorrhoea, also called as CSF leak. In this condition, the head injury leads to a break in the skull bone, through which the cerebrospinal fluid (fluid inside the brain cavities) can leak out.

The chance of a local nose infection is also there, but CSF leak still, must be excluded.

This condition may occur several months to years after the head injury also.

The risk of this condition is that you may develop meningitis (brain fever infection), as the bacteria can reach the brain through the nose and the skull defect.

You should consult a Neurologist for evaluation and diagnosis.

Best wishes,
