Left Arm Pain, Blunt And Protruding Disk Disk. Done MRI Of Shoulder, Blood Test. Taken Cortisone Injection. Is IT RA?

Since the end of March I have been experiencing aches in my left arm. Since then I have seen my orthopedic, had an MRI of my shoulder and humurous and only a little liquid around my should. I recd a cortazon injection and it seemed to relieve a bit for a week or so but now the pain is worse than ever. Shot was in June and now I just don't sleep at night. I can fall asleep initially with an icepack but then within two hours max I am up for the night because as soon as I relax my left arm the pain is excrutiating. I went to my pc doc and they did an MRI of my neck and spine and found a blunt disk in my neck and a purtruding disk in my back. I have an appt this week with the Neurosurgeon but with all of the pain I have in my arm I am not convinced that it is the neck or back. I am limited to movement in my arm and often it weakens and I can't open a door handle or I drop the blow dryer for example. I had blood work done also for RA but that came back fine. I have type 2 diabetes which is in control with my meds. I am just lost and can't believe how painful this is. Once I get up for the day, it completely eases up and only bothers me a bit with the limited movement and some discomfort when I am typing at work. My PC had suggested Lupus but now that the MRI came back with some results I believe she is leaning toward a diagnosis from the Neurosurgeon. On a scale of 1-10 in pain I am at a 10 every night and I can withstand a lot of pain. I am just so distraut with this and especially not knowing what it could be. Any suggestions? Excuse the spelling this doesn't allow me abc check. Thank you.

Hi,

Your left arm pain seems to be due to compression of nerve of nerve root by protruding disc. These pain not seems to be related to rheumatoid arthritis(RA).
As you don't get better with conservative treatment and epidural(cortisone) injection, I suggest you undergo surgery, by which the nerves are decompressed by removing the protruded disc (discectomy), which would significantly improve your symptoms.

Hope this helps you. Let me know if you have any more concern.

Hello

You are a diabetic and now having pain in your shoulder and arm. You also have limited movements of shoulder which got little relieved with cortisone injection in June. All the history is suggestive of "Frozen shoulder" which is very common in diabetic patients. Don't think of RA or lupus, highly unlikely. Get another Cortisone injection and start good physiotherapy of shoulder. You need good mobilisation of your arm otherwise the disease will try to fix your movements. I hope you will get complete recovery.

Best wishes
