I had an MRI of my lower back due to lower back pain. Finding was an 11 mm rounded T2 hypointensity noted within the anterolateral portion of the upper Lawrence. Impression was: 11 mm T2 hypointense lesion within the upper left kidney related to pulsation artifact versus underlying renal lesion. Correlation with CT recommended. I see my urologist Monday at the request of my orthopaedic back doctor. What does the above mean?
The mention of a 11 mm lesion in the upper pole of left kidney is not entirely abnormal. It can be a false appearance due to the blood flowing around the kidney. Since we need to confirm the area, evaluating it using another imaging modality is helpful. A 11 mm lesion even if present is very small and need not necessarily be the cause of your back pain. The MRI reporting doctor has suggested a CT scan which is a good imaging modality to clarify the MRI findings. If possible, an ultrasound scan can be done before the CT scan as Ultrasound scan can be done even by the urologist.
