What Could Be Runny Nose, sneezing, slight Cough And Temperature Between 99.00 To 100.6 In A 4 Years Old Child?

My 4 year old son started complaining of a sore throat on Sunday night (1/12). He woke up Monday morning complaining of a severe sore throat, watery eyes, a slight cough, and very sleepy. I took him to the pediatrician Monday morning to find out his glands were very swollen, painful to touch. Strep culture is negative. By Monday night, he ate a good dinner after not eating much all day, but popscicles, hard candy, and drinking juice. During the day Monday his temperature ranged from 99.0 to 100.00. By Tuesday morning, he spiked a fever of 101.4. He has intermittent periods where he has energy, plays, runs around, etc. Then he has periods where he is completely lethargic and we are barely able to wake him. On Tuesday morning, he sounded like he had a normal cold with a runny nose, some sneezing, and still a slight cough. Today, he did pretty good. Still his temperature is between 99.00 to 100.6. Still with periods of lethargy and active behavior. As of right now, he is very lethargic and running a fever of 100.8 He really has no other major systems of a cold or anything else. He is no longer complaining of a sore throat.

Hi, thank you for asking healthcare magic.
These are signs and symptoms of common cold. This infection is generally caused by a virus and so antibiotics are not needed except when there complications. Most of the time, it is self-limiting but symptoms can be controlled.
You may give acetaminophen if the temperature increases, use salty water to reduce nasal congestion. Most of the over-the-counter cold medications are not good for children.
I would suggest that you take the child back to the pediatrician if symptoms persist for long or become worse.

I hope that answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. We will be delighted to answer more questions from you.
I wish him good health
