Good morning doctor, My Wife is 26 wks pregnant,We went through a routine usg for pregnancy and found that the amniotic fluid index is 22cm.The radiologist says its a border line finding for hydramnios. Can u please tell me is it beyond the normal range or any special precautions to be taken to control the excess amniotic fluid?
Hi, I have gone through your question. Amniotic fluid index of 22 at 26 weeks pregnancy is towards higher side, but it is not polyhydramnios. Polyhydramnios is said when the amniotic fluid index is more than 25. Increased fluid level can be due to many causes: 1. Diabetes in pregnancy 2. TORCH infection( toxoplasmosis, rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes) 3. Any fetal anomaly 4. Placental tumour 5. Idiopathic( no cause found) I would suggest you to consult a fetal medicine specialist, get a detailed ultrasound done, have blood test for TORCH infection and get treated accordingly. There are no special precautions to be taken in increased amniotic fluid at this gestation of pregnancy. Hope you found the answer helpful. Wishing you good health.
