My mother who is almost 92 makes humming and noises and she cant hear that she does this(like while watching Tv or in church)...it is not tourettes. When I tell her she is doing this she shrugs her shoulders and has said she can't hear that she is doin this. She has hearing aids but appartently this noise range she cant hear. This repetative noise is making me crazy.........sometimes its like a glutteral sound...its not humming like to a song,
Hello and thanks for your question. Sometimes as elderly people lose some of their hearing they make frequent repetitive sounds as a form of self stimulation. This can be very annoying to those around them. There are no easy solutions. You could try getting her to chew gum or suck on hard candies to try and break the habit. You may also try getting yourself some hear plugs or listen to music with a head set so that it is not something you constantly have to listen to. If you can get her to a speech therapist, sometimes they have luck in helping people break these patterns.
